| Well known for its Tenshukaku and great stone wall, Osaka Castle is the most famous historical landmark of the city. Toyotomi Hideyoshi began building the castle in 1583 and completed the project in three years, but it was completely burnt down by the Tokugawa shogunate in the summer war of 1615 after Hideyoshi\'s death. It was soon rebuilt by the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, but the second castle was again destroyed by fire in 1665. The final reproduction as seen today was completed in 1931. The five-storied donjon (eight stories inside)called Tenshukaku stands 46 meters high at the center of Osaka Castle. |
