| Begun in 1173, the construction for the eight-story tower was completed in 1350. It started to lean 1mm each year due to the uneven settling of its foundation. Repair works began in 1990 when it leaned by 4.5 meters from the perpendicular, and the tower was reopened to public on June 16, 2001 after 11 years of straightening. It was imperceptibly moved back about 40cm, to the level of 1838. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is also the place where Galileo Galilei performed his famous gravity experiment by dropping a feather and a cannonball. |
